The effect of boron on the Hall-Petch behavior of Fe-45Al

Description

This paper is concerned with the effect of boron on the Hall-Petch slope k for the B2 compound FeAl; k is defined by the relationship σy = σo + kd-1/2, where σy is the yield strength, d is the grain size and σo is the lattice resistance. In recent years, there have been numerous studies of the intriguing effects of boron on the mechanical properties of intermetallic compounds. These effects are more than simple increases in the lattice resistance to dislocation motion, which would be expected of an interstitial element such as boron. The purpose of the present note is to examine further the effect of boron on the Hall-Petch behavior of FeAl by studying the mechanical properties of Fe-45Al doped with 500 ppm boron and comparing the results to previous data on unalloyed Fe-45Al processed in the same manner
