The paper treats the special relationship between the high-efficiency particulate air filter and the nuclear energy program. Discussed are the following topics: initial development of paper-made filtration medium, original high-efficiency filter and its combustibility, high-temperature high-efficiency filter, fire-resistant design, chemical corrosion in airstreams, water repellency of filter medium, sealants, gasketing, novel designs for increased capacity, filter testing, HEPA acronym, and government-industry committee for filter improvements
