Dose estimation in Hungarian workplaces based on unattached fraction of radon short-lived progenies

Description

During the radon survey of workplaces in Hungary the equilibrium factor measured by us and the dose conversion factor 5 mSv WLM-1 recommended by ICRP were used for the dose estimations. After studying the air-quality parameters of workplaces it has become apparent that using the same dose conversion factor - e.g. in case of a deep mine and a therapeutical bath - may considerably reduce the reliability of the estimated dose. In order to study this, the concentration of radon (CRn) and its progenies, the unattached fraction of radon short-lived progenies-t (fun), the equilibrium factor (F), the temperature, and relative humidity were measured in a radon therapeutical bath (14 days), in a tourist cave (7), in a medicinal cave (7 days), in a manganese deep mine (9 days), and in a deep geological radioactive waste deposit under construction (7 days). With the above data known the possible dose conversion factors were determined taking into consideration respiration through the nose (DCFn) and through the mouth (DCFm), and then calculating with the annual labour hours (WT) related to the given territory the effective dose of the workers (En, Em) was estimated
