High temperature damage of a re-sulfurized stainless steel

Description

After having evoked the industrial problem raised by high-temperature damage in the 303 stainless steel, and outlined that the experimental study of high-temperature damage implies the study of the sane (or non damaged) material, the study of micro-voids germination, growth and coalescence, and the study of the material failure process, the author of this research thesis reports a bibliographical study on the behaviour of sane re-sulfurized stainless steel and different damage models. He presents experimental techniques (thermal-mechanical compression and tensile tests, image analysis in optical microscopy) which have been used in this work, and describes and comments results obtained on axisymmetric samples for micro-void germination, growth and coalescence in case of a damage under low and medium stress triaxiality. The last part addresses the study of the damage of strongly notched samples (stress triaxialities close to those existing at the crack bottom)

Abstract (French)

La mise en forme a chaud de barres d'acier inoxydable resulfure AISI 303 peut poser probleme pour des passes de laminage trop 'contraignantes'. On observe alors l'apparition d'une fissure en tete de barre ainsi que la formation de micro-cavites en aval de celle-ci. L'endommagement de cet acier a ete etudie a 900 et 1100 deg. C. Des essais de traction interrompus ont ete realises sur des eprouvettes axisymetriques, lisses et entaillees, et des eprouvettes a section carree fortement entaillees. Pour differents allongements, des observations ont ete realisees a l'echelle macroscopique (force-deplacements, evolution de la geometrie) et a l'echelle microscopique (mesures de fractions et densites surfaciques de cavites en microscopie optique dans un plan median des eprouvettes). Les resultats obtenus font apparaitre un phenomene de localisation de l'endommagement a 90 deg. par rapport a l'axe de traction pour les eprouvettes lisses et a 45 deg. pour les eprouvettes entaillees. L'importance primordiale de la loi de comportement du materiau sain (avec recristallisation dynamique) sur la localisation de la deformation et de l'endommagement a ete montree. Les essais sur eprouvettes fortement entaillees ont permis de donner une borne inferieure de la fraction surfacique de cavites proche de la rupture. (auteur)
