The role of age in the remote after-effects for rats externally irradiated with β particles

Description
A total-body exposure of adult (four-to six-months-old) and young (one-month-old) female rats to β-rays (Sr90 - Y90) of 200 to 1600 rads affects slightly their average life. Irradiated animals exhibited an increased frequency of benign and malignant mamma tumours and the appearance of skin and bone tissue neoplasms. Young rats were more receptive than adults to gamma tumours. A dose of 1600 rads caused more frequently the skin sarcoma in young rats and basal-cell and squamouscell carcinomas in adults. Bone tissue tumours were only detected in adult animals at the doses of 800 to 1600 rads
