Status of MedAustron – the Austrian Ion Therapy and Research Centre

Creators

Description

The MedAustron ion therapy and research centre is presently under construction in Wiener Neustadt, Austria. The facility is based on a synchrotron which will deliver proton beams of up to 800 MeV and carbon ion beams of up to 400 MeV/nucleon kinetic energy for tumour treatment and non-clinical research applications from 2015 onwards. In the first part of the seminar, a brief introduction to ion therapy will be given. In the second part the design choices and main parameters of the MedAustron centre will be explained. In the final part the realisation strategy, involving a strong collaboration with CERN and other international research institutes will be discussed and the overall project status will be presented with a focus on the civil engineering that is already finished.
