The Swedish programme for spent fuel and radioactive waste management

Description

The Swedish nuclear power production comprises 12 reactor units with the total capacity of 9,500 MW, which generate 45 - 50 % of the electricity produced in Sweden, the rest being hydroelectricity. In 1984, the electricity production was around 120 TWh. The first Swedish reactor was taken in operation in 1972. According to the decision made by the Parliament, no more reactor will be built, and the existing reactors are not allowed to be operated beyond the year 2010. This was the result of public debate and a referendum, and naturally, it has greatly influenced the nuclear waste program. The decision has determined the timing for and the quantity of the disposal of nuclear wastes of different kinds. Besides, the debate and the decision have also contributed to the fact that Sweden today has developed a fairly complete system for the back end of the fuel cycle technically, but also with regard to legal, administrative and financial matters. Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Co. undertakes the necessary research work and planning for the design and construction of the required waste management facilities. The nuclear waste management scheme and the systems in operation or under construction are described. (Kako, I.)
