Radiation polymerisation of tetrafluoroethylene in Freon-12
- 1. Atomic Energy Board, Pelindaba, Pretoria (South Africa). Chemistry Div.
Description
The radiation-induced solution-polymerisation of tetrafluoroethylene in Freon-12 has been investigated over the temperature range of -62 degrees Celsius to -10 degrees Celsius. The rate of polymerisation for the in-source process was found to exhibit a 0,5 order dependence on the radiation intensity and an activation energy of 25,3 kJ/mole was calculated. The number-average molecular mass of the product PTFE was found to range from 2x104 to 8x104, was relatively independent of the radiation intensity, and a maximum at a monomer concentration of approximately 70 mole per cent. The postpolymerisation process was found to greatly enhance the molecular mass of the product PTFE and values as high as 1,7 x 106 were obtained at a monomer concentration of 60 mole per cent
