Description
The Lamb shift is derived from an error law which shows that the fluctuating position of the electron undergoes a Brownian motion process. The assumption of a zero-point energy is replaced by deriving the expression for the average energy from Einstein's radiation mechanism. Welton's original derivation leads to a contradiction with Planck's radiation balance condition at equilibrium
