Evaluation of possibility presence neutrons in environment of low-background gamma spectroscopy system

Description

Gamma lines emitted after neutron capture, as well as after inelastic scattering in a Ge spectroscopy system were detected and analyzed in different environments. Two HPGe detectors were located in two different passive shields: one in pre WW II iron, and the second in commercial low-background lead. The flux of neutrons was calculated and the obtained values were compared for the two different kinds of detector shield. Several materials having different neutron slowing-down properties were packed in Marinelli geometry, positioned on the lead shielded detector and measured for around 1000 ks. The main goal was to estimate a possible influence of the sample on the intensity of the neutron induced Ge gamma lines. On the iron shielded detector a massive (3 inch thick) NaI Compton suppression system showed a measurable activity from neutron capture and inelastic scattering at sodium. (author)

Abstract (Serbian)

Gama zracenje emitovano nakon zahvata neutrona kao i nakon neelastcnog rasejanja u Ge spektroskopskom sistemu je detektovano i analizirano. Koriscena su dva HPGe detektora sa razlicitim tipovima pasivne zastite (jedan od njih je bio smesten u gvozdenoj zastiti a drugi u olovnoj zastiti). Odredjene su vrednosti fluksa neutrona i poredjene su za razlicite tipove zastite detektora. Nekoliko materijala koji imaju razlicite uticaje na usporavanje nutrona pakovani su u Marineli geometriju, postavljeni oko HPGe detektora u olovnoj zastiti, vrsena su merenja koja su trajala priblizno 1000 ks i odredjen je uticaj tih materijala na intezitet neutronima indukovanih germanijumskih gama linija. Takodje, merenjem pomocu HPGe detektora u gvozdenoj zastiti koji je bio pasivno okruzen sa zastitnim NaI detektorom odredjena je aktivnost koja potice od zahvata neutrona i neelasticnog raseanja na jezgrima joda i natrijuma.
