Development of robot technology to contribute to 1F decommissioning (3). Remote fuel removal system from unit 2 spent fuel pool

Description

In order to expedite the removal of stored fuel from the spent fuel pool of Unit 2 at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, where the building remains intact without hydrogen explosion even after the Great East Japan Earthquake, a method was devised. This method involves installing fuel handling equipment at an opening on the exterior wall of the building operating floor, without dismantling the upper part of the building, to remotely retrieve fuel from the pool. Due to dimensional constraints of the opening, conventional gantry cranes cannot be applied to the fuel handling equipment. Therefore, existing boom-type crane technology is being adapted for the fuel handling equipment, considering seismic resistance, remote operability, safety functions, etc., to proceed with the manufacture of equipment for initiating fuel retrieval. 東日本大震災後も水素爆発に至らず建屋が残存している福島第一原子力発電所2号機の使用済燃料プールに貯蔵されているプール燃料の早期取り出しを目的として,建屋上部は解体せず,建屋オペレーティングフロア外壁に設ける開口部から投入する燃料取扱設備により,遠隔操作でプール燃料を取り出す工法を立案した。開口部の寸法制約等の理由により,燃料取扱設備には従来型の門型クレーンを適用できない。このため,燃料取扱設備には既存のブーム型クレーンの技術を応用し,耐震性・遠隔操作性・安全機能等に考慮して,燃料取り出し開始に向けた機器製造を進めている。(著者)
