Studying behaviour of hot wastes from reprocessing of fast reactor fuel elements by the gas-fluoride method

Description

The results of investigating certain physico-chemical and radiation properties of high level radioactive solid waste are presented. Reprocessing facility characteristics and investigation methods are described. Results of measuring heat generation from irradiated fuel and radioactive waste are reported. A fission product balance is presented. The radiation gas release rate is evaluated on the basis of observations over a period of one year. The amount of radionuclides released in the gas phase from solid waste is determined. The level of gas phase contamination during the waste storage is calculated. It is concluded that the radioactive waste should be placed in hermetically sealed containers for long-term storage under controlled conditions
