A second generation finite element computer program for stress analysis is under development. Incorporated in the computer program are finite elements which satisfy the completeness and continuity requirements for arbitrary order polynomial approximating functions. The distinguishing feature of the new algorithm is that it permits the user to exercise control over both the number of finite elements and the order
