Manpower development and man-machine interface - practice in Canada

  • 1. Ontario Hydro, Toronto

Description

Ontario Hydro's comprehensive manpower development program was started in the 1950's for Canada's first nuclear-electric station (25 MWe) which has operated with high reliability since 1962. The manpower program has grown to serve a large and successful commercial CANDU nuclear program (6847 MWe in-service and 6941 MWe under construction). Two major Training Centers are located very close to the five 4-unit stations they serve. These facilities include 5 full-scope replica simulators. Ontario Hydro's nuclear training is intensive for all categories of operating, maintenance and technical support staff. Intensive radiation protection training is provided for all staff to support the ALARA principle and to minimize the total number of people required for efficient, effective and safe operation. Ontario Hydro recognizes the need for attention to, and improvement of the man-machine interface. This applies throughout a nuclear station, not just in the control room
