On meteorites discovered in Armenia

Description

A summary of evidence on meteorites in the area of Armenia is presented. The first meteorite that landed in 1906 near the village of Koghb of the Tavush province was chondrite (weight of 3,719 g). The second one fell in 1911 (1912) and it was achondrite (68.5 or 107.2 g) named Yerevan by the place of its falling: it had the size of 5 x 6 x 7 cm and was covered with a glossy crust of melting. In 1927-1928, it was split into three pieces that were handed over to the Azerbaijanian Polytechnical Institute, the Polytechnical Institute of Kuibyshev (Samara), the last one being handed over to the IGS of Armenia in 1975. It turned out to be impossible to learn about the fate of the meteorite sent to Azerbaijan, despite multiple requests. The second part of the meteorite was sent to the Committee on Meteorites of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN). Among the samples owned by Academician A. T. Aslanyan, there is an "iron meteorite from Nork" that was sawn into two parts (631g and 58.4g). The "Yerevan" stony meteorite and the "iron meteorite from Nork" were handed over to the Geology Museum of the IGS and are displayed among other unique exhibits. In 2005, Dr. Ara Avagyan found an iron meteorite with clear signs of thermal impact in the middle-stream thalweg of the Ghetik River. Its weight is 740 g
