Report of JAIF-GKAE seminar on experience in LWR design and seismic strength

Description

Eight USSR experts came to Tokyo, and JAIF-GKAE seminar on experience in LWR design and seismic strength was held from January 29 to 31, 1990. From USSR side, four papers on the design of VVER-1000 and three papers on the aseismatic design standards and aseismatic design and tests were published. From Japanese side, the information on the design of ABWR and APWR, the basic policy of the aseismatic design, the aseismatic verifying test and so on were published. Besides, the experience on the development of an improved safety reactor for district heating was reported by USSR side. The anguish and difficulty of engineers at the time of actual design were expressed frankly by USSR experts, and it was interesting. After the Chernobyl accident, the zeal to increase safety by any means in the design of reactors and the aseismatic capability was felt. As to the design of VVER-1000, the prevention of reactivity accident is considered earnestly, and it is the doubt for Japanese side that the boron concentration in primary coolant is abnormally high. Examination was begun on earthquakes strenuously also in USSR. (K.I.)
