Instabilities in mirror confined hot electron plasmas
Description
Early experiments on ECRH plasmas in simple mirrors showed that under some operating conditions rapid losses of a considerable fraction of the plasma energy could occur. Further observations allowed the identification of two distinct modes of instability. These experiments were carried out in the PTF device at ORNL about 1965 to 1966. The PTF device was a simple mirror machine heated with up to 4 kW of ECRH power at a frequency of 10.6 GHz. The plasma radius in the midplane was about 10 cm
