Clinical use and basic-science programs at HIMAC

Description
Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC) is the first large accelerator constructed for medical purposes, and has been successfully carrying out cancer treatments using carbon beams since 1994. The facility is operated 24 hours a day. HIMAC supplies the various heavy-ion beams to basic-science programs during the night and on weekends, while the daytime is devoted to clinical use. Although changing the accelerator condition twice a day is a heavy burden for scheduling and everyday operation, it allows for an efficient use of the facility, and produces much outcome. The present status of the facility and an outline of the basic-science programs are described in this review. (author)
