Description

Identification of engineering parameters and material choices for fusion reactors are still highly tentative. Four different classes of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) problems are embodied in current fusion reactor concepts: (1) Use of liquid Li may lead to SCC analogous to that of liquid Na in LMFBRs. (2) As water is being considered as the first wall coolant, cracking of sensitized austenitic stainless steel weldments will be of definite concern unless reductants can be added to the water. (3) In the presence of impurities, liquid Li can penetrate the grain boundaries of steels and Nb. (4) The hydrogen isotopes used in the fuel can give rise to SCC in the case of refractory metals
