This report represents some of the main features of a superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) system, focusing primarily on the use of He II to provide cryogenic stability. Both steady state and transient heat transfer are discussed. Also, various heat flow geometries are investigated. Topics considered include thermal equilibrium, magnetic energy storage equipment, heat transfer, geometry, superconducting magnets, steady-state conditions, thermodynamics, and cryogenic fluids
