On-line measurement of total sodium in liquid process streams by neutron activation analysis

  • 1. Dow Chemical Co., Midland, MI

Description

A method based on the principles of neutron activation analysis has been developed to measure total sodium in liquid process streams. This method uses the 23Na(n,p)23Ne reaction to produce an activation product which can be removed from matrix interferences by a gas purge followed by β counting of the purged gas. Fluorine, thorium, and uranium are the only known interferences. The method is applicable for sodium concentrations greater than 0.1%. The electronics have been proven in on-line applications
