Process for producing polystyrene by utilizing decaboron and neutron beams
Description
A novel process is provided for producing polystyrene by adding decaborane to the styrene monomer, and irradiating it with neutron beams. The styrene alone never polymerizes, but it easily polymerizes in a short time when it is mixed with decaborane B10H14. For example, 1.3 g of styrene were mixed with 3 mg of decaborane. The mixture was sealed in a quartz tube and irradiated with a neutron flux of 8 x 1013 n/cm2. See for 30 sec, yielding 103 grams of polystyrene having a Vicker's hardness of 15.7. (Iwakiri, K.)
