Description
The presence of aquatic gastropod species in 39 sampling sites in Vienna waters was found to be highly sensitive to anthropogenic pollution. Compared to investigations before 1970, high species losses appear in calm waters and flowing waters. Significant factors of the species presence are flow, isolation degree of the waters, the natural and/or less natural land use, and the water quality. The analysis of the heavy metal concentrations (lead, cadmium, Ni, Cu, Zn) in the shelles of three species showed that Bithynia tentaculata accumulates high concentrations, Lymnaea stagnalis on the other hand accumulates very low concentrations. Radix ovata, which appears best suitable for heavy metal monitoring due to long circulation and high availability, is in between. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
(orig.)Additional details
