Description
X-ray diffraction method is applied to study the structure of liquid naphthalene. The main sources of errors are discussed. A numerical analysis is performed of the influence of X-ray data termination on the electron - density radial - distribution functions (EDRDF) and on interatomic distances and coordination numbers determined from these functions. The interatomic distances determined from the EDRDF are shown to be practically independent of the termination angle. A strong dependence of coordination numbers on the termination angle, observed by other authors, is confirmed. Structural analysis of liquid naphthalene C10 H8 by X-ray monochromatic radiation scattering method is given. The X-ray measurements were made at 368K for the scattering angle range Θ varied from 20 to 600. The EDRDF maxima at 0.380, 0.455, 0.535, and 0.625 nm correspond to the intermolecular interactions. The integrals over made it possible to determine the value of the mean coordination numbers 1.36, 2.06, 2.37, and 2.76, respectively. A possibility of comparing coordination numbers obtained in different laboratories for liquids is discussed (Authors)
