Description

The following papers were presented at this session: (1) Implementing Technical Conservatism in Repository Design; (2) Development of General Design Criteria for Repositories; (3) Conceptual Design of a Nuclear Waste Repository in Basalt; (4) Engineering Feasibility Studies for Seven Candidate Salt Domes; (5) Seismic Effects on Underground Openings; (6) Repository Equipment Technology Development; (7) Repository Instrumentation Technology Development; (8) Status of Waste Isolation Pilot Project Design Activities; and (9) Waste Isolation Pilot Plant. The first two papers dealt with generic subjects of design and performance criteria for repositories, and how technical conservatism is implemented in design. Summaries are then presented for three major design activities conducted in 1980, a repository in basalt, engineering feasibility studies for candidate salt domes, and a review and update of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant design activities. The remaining papers dealt with effects of seismic events on underground openings, and the results of equipment and instrumentation development planning activities
