Description
Lithium fluoride loaded into Teflon discs of thickness 9 mg-cm-2 forms a very convenient dosimeter for measuring surface dose rate from beta and gamma radiation. Stacks of thin dosimeters have been used in many special experiments, for example, (a) measurement of the dose to the fingers from 82Br in silica glass vials; and (b) the maximum gamma-ray dose estimation from nuclear heat sources using 238Pu. In both cases the calculated dose agreed with the extrapolated surface dose from the TLD stacks. This has confirmed that theoretical methods can be used to give an early estimate of overexposure, particularly where the incident cannot be reproduced experimentally. (author)
