Effect of sulphide ions on copper base alloys in cooling water system

  • 1. Research and Development Centre, National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd., Noida (India)

Description

The corrosion of 90:10 Cu:Ni, 95:05 Cu:Ni and 65:35 Cu:Zn alloys in 3.5% NaCl and cooling water of one of the NTPC stations has been studied in different concentration of sulphide ions in the laboratory. The experimental techniques used include weight loss method as well as Tafel slop from electrochemical system. The sulphide measurement has been carried out by methylene blue method. It is shown that the presence of sulphide ions increases the corrosion rate of copper base alloys due to formation of copper sulphide as a major corrosion product. (author)
