Disease incidence among adults over a period 1985-1989 in uranium mines' environment

Description

This retrospective study uses official statistical information for a period of five years. The research comprises the Bulgarian settlements of Yana, Gorny Bogrov, Dolny Bogrov and Bukhovo, as well as the control village of German. The values for disease incidence are found to be as follows: German - 535o/oo, Yana - 266o/oo, Bukhovo - 426o/oo, Gorny Bogrov -571o/oo, Dolny Bogrov - 574o/oo. All those values are lower than the average disease incidence for the country as a whole - 1368o/oo). For all investigated settlements it is not observed any statistically reliable increase in incidence of radiation-related diseases as congenital malformations and blood diseases, as well as any changes in immunological status or hematopoiesis. There is an increase in the incidence of some neoplasms in both Gorny Bogrov and Dolny Bogrov which could be connected with radiation impact. (author)
