The system earth. Climate research in the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program (IGBP)

Substances that are released through human activity can accumulate in the atmosphere. The greenhouse effect, a precondition for life on Earth, has grown so strongly since the beginning of this century that adverse effects on global living conditions must now be reckoned with. The Earth must be understood as a system whose components interact closely. The international Geosphere-Biosphere Programme pursues the aim of examining this global aspect of our environment. Abstract (German)

Durch menschliche Aktivitaeten werden Stoffe freigesetzt, die sich in der Atmosphaere akkumulieren. Der fuer das Leben notwendige Treibhauseffekt hat sich dadurch seit Beginn dieses Jahrhunderts so verstaerkt, dass mit negativen Folgen fuer die Lebensbedingungen auf der Erde gerechnet werden muss. Die Erde ist dabei als ein System zu begreifen, dessen Komponenten in enger Wechselbeziehung stehen. Eine Untersuchung dieser globalen Perspektive unserer Umwelt hat sich das Internationale Geosphaeren-Biosphaeren-Programm zum Ziel gesetzt. (orig.)
