Spectroscopic investigations of the crystallographic and magnetic properties of TbAsO4 at low temperatures

Description

The absorption spectra and the Zeeman effect of TbAsO4 was investigated at low temperatures. The TbAsO4 monocrystals were prepared by a flow medium method. The absorption spectrum was recorded in a 3.4 m -Jarrel-Ash-Ebert lattice spectrograph in dependence of temperature and external magnetic field whereby a xenon high-pressure lamp was used as light source. The magnetic field was measured with a calibrated. Hall probe, fields upto 20 KOe were produced with a conventional magnet. The spectroscopic investigations showed that TbAsO4 converts from tetrogonal zirconium structure into a face centered or orthorhombic symmetry at 27 K. This phase transition is caused by a cooperative Jahn-Teller effect. The splitting of the two lower crystal field singlets at temperatures below 1.48 K is a result of the antiferromagnetic ordering of the induced magnetic moments. The magnetic ordering in TbAsO4, as opposed to DyVO4 and DyAsO4, is a result of the exchange interaction between Tb3+ ions, as the dipole-dipole interaction even inhibits the ordering. The metamagnetic phase transition can be well described and understood by means of the Kasten hose model. (FW)

Abstract (German)

(FW)
