In vivo applications of spectroscopic localization by imaging

The authors have measured localized hydrogen spectra in three human subjects, using spectroscopic localization by imaging (SLIM), a new method that we proposed earlier. The lower leg of a healthy volunteer, the head of a healthy volunteer, and the thighs of a patient with femoral osteosarcoma were studied. In each case, SLIM required on 16-64 phase-encoded spectroscopic signals, together with structural information from a nonspectroscopic image, to derive accurate localized spectra. Ordinary Fourier transform chemical shift imaging required at least 256 signals to derive comparable results
