Highlights: • Oxidation of o-, m-, and p-phenylenediamine under various acidic conditions. • Systematic analysis of UV-visible, FTIR and Raman spectra of polyphenylenediamines. • Probable incorporation of 2,5-diamino-p-benzoquinone unit in poly(p-phenylenediamine).
