Assessment of the TMI-2 RPV lower head temperature from metallurgical estimates

Description
An experimental program has been carried out to correlate the grain size to the temperature and the level of restrained thermal expansion experienced by the material (A 533B steel from the Midland reactor). The temperatures selected were 900, 1000, 1050 and 1100 deg C. The restrained thermal expansion ranged from 0 to 100%. The results of the investigation revealed that the effect of the restrained thermal expansion on the grain size is particularly severe at the higher temperatures: while at 900 deg C the average grain size ranges from 25 microns at 0% restraint to 39 microns at 100% of impeded thermal expansion, at 1100 deg C, it swells from 100 to 440 microns. 14 figs., 1 tab., 14 refs
