A device for locating acoustic wave emitting sources

Description

The invention relates to a device for locating acoustic wave emitting sources. A two dimensional sensor network, with diamond-shaped (or the like) meshes, is placed on the surface of a structure in which acoustic wave emitting sources are to be located. The sensors are arranged according to two groups, each of which is connected to a clock and a counter. Every signal fed into a mesh of the network inhibits all the other sensors not belonging to said mesh; the location of the source within the diamond-shaped mesh is achieved by triangulation. This can be applied to the detection of flaws in metal structures, e.g. in nuclear reactor vessels

Abstract (French)

L'invention concerne un dispositif de localisation de sources d'emission acoustique. Un reseau bidimensionnel de capteurs, dont la maille a la forme d'un losange (ou un pseudo losange), est place sur la surface d'une structure ou l'on veut localiser les sources d'emission acoustique. Les capteurs sont classes selon deux groupes, chaque groupe etant relie a une horloge et un compteur. L'arrivee d'un signal dans une maille inhibe tous les autres capteurs ne faisant pas partie de la maille. La position de la source dans le losange est obtenue par triangulation. Ceci est applicable a la detection de defaut dans les structures metalliques notamment les cuves de reacteurs nucleaires
