Description
Ignalina unit 1 restarted at the end of September having met the priority requirements of an international panel that has been reviewing its safety. Unit 2 has now shut down and will not be restarted until it too has fulfilled the requirements. These recommendations and all the safety improvement efforts now underway at Ignalina are underpinned by the Safety Analysis Report (SAR) prepared by the station with the help of Western engineering organisations and the NSSS designer, RDIPE. The Ignalina experience should prove valuable in upgrading safety at other Soviet-designed plants. (Author)
