Bioelectric activity of the brain in proton irradiation of the hypophysis with high doses

Description

The data on repeated studies of the bioelectric activity of the brain were analyzed in 59 patients with dyshormonal tumours (56 patients with mammary gland carcinoma in the stage of generalized metastasization and 3 patients with prostate cancer of stage 4) before and after remote stereotaxic proton irradiation of the hypophysis with the purpose of suppressing its function. An attempt is made to explain diffuse changes in the electric activity at early postradiation periods in a number of patients. These changes are shown by intensification of the slow activity and can indicate the activation of the hypothalamic structures in response to local radiation effect on the hypophysis. The clinico-electrophysiological data were evaluated tentatively. Conclusions are made on the safety of the used absorbed doses and the rhythms of irradiation from the point of view of radiation injuries
