Inertial-electrostatic confinement studies

Description

Inertial-Electrostatic Confinement is one of the earliest plasma confinement concepts, having first been suggested by P. T. Farnsworth in the 1950s. The concept involves a simple apparatus of concentric spherical electrostatic grids and intricate physics. An electrostatic structure is formed from the confluence of ion beams with a background of electrons that are provided by the grid. New results presented here are: a detailed comparison between single grid systems and two grid systems with dispenser cathodes, a conceptual design for an IEC neutron source, and an advanced concept for generalizing IEC configurations to three dimensions with both electric and magnetic fields
