Electron-impact excitation studies involving polarized V.U.V. radiation

Description

Recent measurements of the polarization of resonance radiation from the rare gases He, Ne, Ar and Kr are discussed. Data were taken in both a non-coincidence mode and also in a coincidence mode in which the scattering plane was defined. By using polarization analysers both in and out of the scattering plane, very complete information about the excited state charge clouds was obtained. Comparisons are made with recent theoretical calculations, and differences between He and the heavier rare gases are highlighted. 42 refs.; 7 figs.; 1 table
