Hysterosonography and hysterography in benign and malignant diseases of the uterus

To evaluate the diagnostic value of hysterography (HG) and hysterosonography (HS), a comparative study was done in 41 patients (aged 36-74 years, n = 55). All patients were operated on, and the surgery specimen was immediately scanned by HS followed by HG. The results were compared with the histologic findings (16 myomas, five adenocarcinomas, 20 no evidence of disease). HS seems to be superior to HG. For myomas, the sensitivity and specificity of HS were 0.875 and 1.0; of HG, 0.0625 and 1.0. For carcinomas, the figures were 1.0 and 1.0 for HS, 1.0 and 0.872 for HG. In addition, HS allows the visualization of the endometrium, the myometrium, the diameter of myomas, and the depth of infiltration
