Energy loss of 33.2-TeV Pb ions in solids

  • 1. Oak Ridge National Lab., TN (United States)

Description

A new aspect in the theory of stopping power has been introduced by Lindhard and Sorensen (LS). They calculate that the stopping of ultrarelativisitic ions will be affected by the nuclear size of the projectile. The authors have measured energy losses from 0.1 to 0.8% for 33.2-TeV (160 GeV A) Pb ions in C, Si, Cu, Sn, and Pb. The beams were obtained from the SPS facility at CERN, and the energy loss were measured using magnetic analysis in an ∼800 m beam line. The results, in the main, confirm the predictions of the LS theory
