The chemical composition of hollandite in SYNROC-B

  • 1. New South Wales Inst. of Tech., Broadway (Australia)

Description

Evidence is presented to show that the unit cell formula of the hollandite phase in SYNROC-B is Basub(1.14)Alsub(2.29)Tisub(5.71) O16 (to 2 decimal places) and not BaAl2Ti6O16 as reported in many publications on this subject. This is done through an analysis of the X-ray diffraction patterns of hollandite specimens prepared with varying molar proportions of TiO2 in the starting material. The appearance of a diffuse diffraction profile indicates that short range ordering occurs in the hollandite phase. Measurements of the lattice parameters are also presented for the solid solution series Basub(1.14)Alsub(2.29)Tisub (5.71)O16 to Ksub(2.29)Alsub(2.29)Tisub(5.71)O16 the corresponding potassium hollandite
