Free oscillations of the Sun and giant planets

  • 1. AN SSSR, Moscow. Inst. Fiziki Zemli

Description

A current state of the problem of solar oscillations is given in the survey. The results of observations of solar oscillations with the periods from 5 to 160 min. published up to the end of 1980 are described and their interpretation in connection with the problem of solar structure is discussed. The theory of free oscillations in a linear adiabatic approximation is presented taking into account the influence of a differential rotation. The principles of classification of the theoretical normal modes are given. A problem of excitation of solar pulsations is outlined. The theoretical normal mode oscillation spectra of Jupiter and Saturn are discussed at the end of the review
