Optimization of deconvolution software used in the study of spectra of soil samples from Madagascar

Description

The aim of this work is to perform the deconvolution of gamma spectra by using the deconvolution peak program. Synthetic spectra, reference materials and ten soil samples with various U-238 activities from three regions of Madagascar were used. This work concerns : soil sample spectra with low activities of about (47±2) Bq.kg-1 from Ankatso, soil sample spectra with average activities of about (125±2)Bq.kg-1 from Antsirabe and soil sample spectra with high activities of about (21100± 120) Bq.kg-1 from Vinaninkarena. Singlet and multiplet peaks with various intensities were found in each soil spectrum. Interactive Peak Fit (IPF) program in Genie-PC from Canberra Industries allows to deconvoluate many multiplet regions : quartet within 235 keV-242 keV, Pb-214 and Pb-212 within 294 keV -301 keV; Th-232 daughters within 582 keV - 584 keV; Ac-228 within 904 keV -911 keV and within 964 keV-970 keV and Bi-214 within 1401 keV - 1408 keV. Those peaks were used to quantify considered radionuclides. However, IPF cannot resolve Ra-226 peak at 186,1 keV.

Abstract (French)

L'objectif de ce travail est d'ameliorer la qualite de traitement des spectres gamma par l'utilisation du programme de deconvolution des pics. Nous avons utilise des spectres synthetiques, des materiaux de references RGK-1, RGTh-1 et RGU-1 ainsi que dix spectres de sol de Madagascar. L'etude se rapporte sur trois types de spectre de differentes activites en U-238 d'echantillon de sol de Madagascar: Sol a faible activite de l'ordre de (47±2) Bq.kg-1 provenant d'Ankatso, sol de moyenne activite de l'ordre de (125±2) Bq.kg-1 provenant d'Antsirabe et sol d'activite eleve (21100±120)Bq.kg-1 provenant de Vinaninkarena. Dans chaque spectre on trouve des pics intenses et des pics moins intenses formant des singulets et des multiplets. L'etude montre que le programme de deconvolution des multiplets (Interactive Peak Fit : IPF) contenu dans le logiciel Genie-PC de Canberra Industries a permis de separer les composantes des multiplets dans plusieurs regions de convolution entre les intervalles d'energie: 235 keV et 242 keV correspondant au quartet; 294 keV et 301 keV correspondant au Pb-214 et Pb-212 ; 582 keV et 584 keV correspondant au descendant du Th-232 ; 904 keV et 911 keV et 964 keV et 970 keV correspondant au Ac-228 ; 1401 keV et 1408 keV correspondant au Bi-214 et d'utiliser ces pics pour la quantification des radionucleides consideres. Par contre IPF ne resout pas le cas des pics interferants du Ra-226 a 186,1 keV.
