An attempt of subcriticality measurement by high-energy gamma-ray detecting source multiplication method

  • 1. Japan Atomic Energy Research Inst., Tokai, Ibaraki (Japan). Tokai Research Establishment

Description

A method for monitoring subcriticality in nuclear fuel handling in out-of-reactor facilities is proposed which detects high-energy gamma-rays accompanied by fissions of a neutron source and the surrounding fuel. A preliminary experiment using a critical assembly suggested that the method is promising for applying to the on-site monitoring, however, some problems concerning nuclear data on high-energy gamma-ray properties should be resolved for precise determination of a properly defined subcriticality.
