The price of simple unification

Description

We present the results obtained from our systematic search of a simple Lie group G that unifies weak and electromagnetic interactions in a single truly unified theory. We work with fractionally charged quarks and allow for particles and antiparticles to belong to the same irreducible representation. We find that models based on SU (N), N = 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 are the only viable candidates for simple unification. (Author)
