Application of neutron spectrometry in the DRPS neutron dosimetry service

  • 1. Ministry of Defence, Gosport (United Kingdom). Defence Radiological Protection Service

Description

A method for improving the accuracy of dose assessments undertaken using CR-39 etched track dosemeters is described. This method compensates for the limited energy and angular response of the dosemeter. This work was undertaken following a review of operational neutron fields which indicated that, without this correction, the neutron dose could be underestimated by up to a factor of at least 2. These correction factors are derived from a detailed knowledge of the neutron fields in which the dosemeter is worn and calibrated, together with the energy and angular response of the dosemeter. The occupational location correction factors enable a more accurate assessment of neutron dose to be obtained for both AP and ROT fields, using the dose quantity effective dose equivalent HE.
