Occupational radiation exposures at light-water-cooled reactors in Sweden in the period 1971-1978

The report is a summary of occupational radiation exposures at light-water-cooled reactors (LWRs) in Sweden from 1971, the year when the first unit for electricity production was started in Sweden, until 1978, when six units were in operation. The external exposures have been dominant in comparison with internal exposures. The measured doses, which are interpreted as whole-body doses, are presented in a log-probability diagram. The collective doses are expressed per unit electrical energy generated and per installed electrical capacity. Average doses and the quantity Ω have been calculated for different groups such as plant personnel contractors and various personnel groups. Collective doses for various operations such as fuel changing, mechanical maintenance, waste treatment, steam generator maintenance (PWR) etc. are also given. The experience from the Swedish LWRs is that at PWRs it is especially the work in connection with refuelling and with the steam generators which results in high collective and individual doses. For BWRs it is not possible to identify such dominant dose-associated operations. Here, the repair of the control-rod mechanism and various tasks in the pressure-suppression room give relatively high individual and collective doses. (author)
