More than 30 years elapsed since nuclear power generation was begun in Japan, and in fiscal 1993, it has become to bear 31.2% of the total generated electric power in Japan. Moreover, by utilizing radiation, medical diagnosis and treatment, the improvement of farm products and the extermination of vermins, the treatment of exhaust smoke for environment protection and so on are carried out, in this way, atomic energy is becoming indispensable in relation to the life of people. The new long term plan was decided on the basic policy for the stable supply of energy, the improvement of the quality of national life and the welfare of mankind society under the premise of the peaceful utilization and the securing of safety of atomic energy. In this book, the trend of atomic energy in general in the last one year is summarized. The basic way of thinking and policy of 'the long term plan on the research, development and utilization of atomic energy' which was decided in June, 1994, and the recent trend on the circumstances around the nonproliferation of nuclear weapons, the securing of safety of atomic energy, the opening of information to public and the increase of understanding of nation, the present status of nuclear power generation and its perspective, the nuclear power generation by light water reactor system, the technical development of nuclear fuel cycle, back end countermeasures, the diversified development and basic research of the science and technology of atomic energy, the international cooperation in the field of atomic energy, the base of promoting atomic energy development and utilization and the atomic energy industry in Japan are concretely explained.
