Microstructural Analysis of the Oxidation Products of Metallic Alloys According to the HALOX Development

  • 1. Instituto Balseiro, Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, Centro Atomico Bariloche, Universidad de Buenos Aires (Argentina)

Description

This publication is a first stage in the development of an oxidation process of the fissile material, from spent nuclear fuel elements of research reactors, containing molybdenum. The oxidation of molybdenum powder with air at elevated temperatures (375-500oC) has been studied by means of X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The results show that the only product was MoO3 in two different phases: Monoclinic and Orthorhombic.MoO2 and non-stoichiometric molybdenum oxide such as Mo4O11 were not evidenced in any of the Mo oxidation steps. By monitoring the time required for the complete oxidation of Mo at different conditions of temperature and pressure, a rate equation has been determined for the whole process. The activation energy and the pressure and degree of reaction dependence, has been calculated. This values remain constant trough out the complete reaction
