A model for in-reactor densification of UO2

  • 1. Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd., Chalk River, Ontario. Chalk River Nuclear Labs.

Description

Abstract A modol for the in-roaotor densification of UO2 at temperatures below about 1200 K has boen developed. The approach is based on the build-up of irradiation-produced point defects during a transient period and their annoaling at sintering pores. At 900 K and 1019 fissions m−3 sec−1, the model shows that intragranular pores up to 0·2 μm diameter disappear in about 1 hour; those above 1 μm diameter take about 75 days. The agreement with oxisting results is reasonable.
